Drought Hearing
California's top water official told a congressional committee that the state is facing the most significant water crisis in its history. A House subcommittee met in Fresno yesterday to hear testimony about the drought. Farmers and politicians sent a strong message, but other voices were noticeably absent.

Latinos and HIV
One of the biggest issues in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS is getting those who might be at risk of infection to get tested in a timely way. Treatment is much less effective for those who avoid HIV testing until their infections are advanced. That problem is particularly acute among Latino immigrants, and treatment specialists are now trying to understand why.

Green Buildings
California has just become the first state in the country to adopt green building standards. The goal is to cut carbon emissions to comply with the state's stringent global warming law. The new building standards will apply to everything -- from homes, to commercial buildings, to schools and hospitals.

California Rice
What does a global shortage of trade-able rice have to do with California? Everything, as it turns out. California is the largest U.S. exporter of the kind of rice used in most Asian and Mediterranean cuisines, and a short supply on world markets has nearly doubled prices. Rice farmers in Sacramento are poised to reap record profits.

Summer Jobs
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
We all know how the rotten economy is affecting homeowners, and sky high fuel prices are taking their toll on all of us. Also caught in the downturn are teenagers looking for a little summer job experience. More than one and a half million teens typically look for jobs during their three month break from school. Now, with the unemployment rate nearing seven percent in California, many young people are finding this year's job market a bit daunting.

Swap Meet
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
You might think a sinking economy would be a boon to people selling their wares at low cost swap meets and flea markets -- but you'd be wrong. They're struggling too. We visit one of Huntington Beach's oldest swap meets for an audio postcard.

Olympic Underdogs
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
Though the U.S. typically dominates summer Olympic sports such as swimming, gymnastics and basketball, that's not so much the case when it comes to badminton. Still, the U.S. badminton team is undaunted. Holed up at their training center in Orange County, they've committed to raising the sport's profile in the U.S. and to beating low expectations in Beijing.

Alive in Necropolis
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
The city of Colma, just south of San Francisco, is known for having 2,000 living residents and more than two million dead ones. The cemeteries of Colma serve as the fog-bound setting of Doug Dorst's entertaining and fantastical first novel, "Alive in Necropolis." Our book critic Oscar Villalon has a review.
