California Emissions and an Obama EPA
When it comes to tailpipe emissions from cars, California is the only state that can set a stricter standard than the federal government. But so far, the federal EPA has blocked those efforts. California regulators and activists hope Barack Obama's EPA will grant the state the waiver it needs to start enforcing its rules. In the first of a series of reports on what Californians are expecting from the new president, we look at what could be one of Obama's first major environmental decisions.

Shakespeare Saved
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
We kick off 2009 with a success story for a non-profit arts group on the Central Coast. Last week, the renowned Shakespeare Santa Cruz theater company avoided going under by raising nearly $500,000 at the last minute.

Arts Outlook
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
Not all arts organizations are as lucky as Shakespeare Santa Cruz. From large opera companies to mid-sized theatre groups and string quartets, arts groups of all sizes are fighting to keep their doors open. With the curtain rising on 2009, how can cultural institutions survive the recession?
Guests:
• John Killacky, program officer for arts and culture at the San Francisco Foundation

Darwin's Archaeopteryx
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
It's a big year for fans of Charles Darwin. His 200th birthday falls in 2009, as does the 150th anniversary of the publication of "On the Origin of Species." One of the iconic fossils that proved Darwin's theory of evolution was recently flown to Stanford University for an unusual test. It's called the Archaeopteryx, and even a visionary like Darwin could not have foreseen how California scientists might one day bombard this fossil with high-tech gadgetry.

Cycling for Obama
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
Ryan Bowen doesn't have tickets to the presidential inauguration, but the 22 year old has a really cheap way to get there. The Occidental College grad is riding his bike 4,000 miles, from L.A. to Washington, D.C. He left Los Angeles on December 2nd. We caught up with him earlier this week in New Orleans.

San Francisco's Bike Kitchen
ListenListen (RealMedia stream)
Serious cyclists know how to change their own tires, but casual bikers who don't might end up paying someone else to do it. San Francisco's Bike Kitchen offers another option. Amanda Stupi visited the do-it-yourself bicycle repair shop and filed this audio postcard.

The Academic Job Market
The recession is hitting colleges in California and across the country -- and it's striking just as graduate students are searching for faculty jobs. We visit a convention crowded with would-be English and language professors.

Orange County's Community Courts
Community courts have been around for years in California. They typically focus on single issues like drugs or homelessness, with the aim of directing offenders toward help instead of jail. Orange County is the first in the state to locate these 'community courts' -- and related services -- under one roof.
