listening help
Below are some basic pointers on how to use The California Report audio archives.

How do I listen online?

Hardware: You need a computer with a sound card and either speakers or headphones. Most computers sold within the last five years or advertised as "multimedia" have these.

Software: You'll need to have RealPlayer installed on your computer. It is available for free and can be downloaded.

Download RealPlayer

Why did I receive a "500 error"?

When you click on the "listen" icon beside a particular report, that will launch a pop-up and, providing you have the RealAudio plug-in, the audio clip will automatically begin to play. If instead you receive a page stating "500 error" that means you may have cookies and/or pop-ups disabled on your browser. If you enable them through your browser settings then the 500 errors will stop and you can listen to the audio archives. Please also check your Web browser's security settings to make sure Javascript is enabled. In the security panel's "custom level" screen, please scroll down until you see the "scripting" section.

I have Real and I get the pop-up but it just continues to buffer and not play. What can I do?

In this case, you should click on the "Still no audio? Click here." link at the bottom of the pop-up page. This is a direct link to the audio file and will launch it directly within the Real Player.

It begins playing the wrong story or gives me a "file not found" error. What happened?

This usually means we made a mistake! We have thousands of audio clips we are managing on an ongoing basis so we truly appreciate it when folks take the time to notify us when they discover an error. Please send an email message to us at: calreport@kqed.org. In your email, be sure to specify the date and time of the specific audio report. That will help us find it and fix it that much sooner.
